To the west part of Syros – just 9 km from Hermoupolis – we meet Kini, a
picturesque seaside fishing village, with a sandy shore, awarded with the Blue
Flag,
proof of a clear and well organised shore.

There
are small taverns, restaurants and cafés where one can enjoy the unique in
harmony of colours sunset while drinking coffee or
ouzo.
Before reaching the village, you meet Saint Barbara’ s Monastery, built last
century, where you can admire the remarkable icons depicting the Saint’s life.
In the monastery there is an exhibition of handmade textiles made in the
traditional loom.
In the village hill there is the church of the Assumption of the Virgin which is
celebrated on 15th August.
About 100 m off the shore of the village there is the ‘’Fishing Boats, Tools,
Aquatic Organisms and Oysters Museum’’, a unique museum of its kind in the
Cyclades.

In Kini the cultural activities are many as the active Nautical Ecologic
Cultural Club of Kini organises various events and exhibitions during the
summer. On 29th June is Saint Peter’s festival, an event for the local people
and the visitors with great success. The procession of the Saint’s icon is done
by caique in
Kini bay accompanied by other decorated boats. Wine, fish soup, and paelia are
offered during the festival and the
entertainment includes live music, singing and dancing. On 15th August the old
custom ‘’Fotarides’ comes to life. Every family builds bonfires in tins which
they place on the coping of their houses, while the children undertake the
decoration of the beach and the stone parapets.
